Text of Hadeeth: Safwan ibn Assal (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that once a Jew said to one of his friends: Let’s go to that Prophet. So the friend said: Don’t call him a Prophet because if he gets to hear this, he would be very happy. Then both of them went to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and questioned him about the nine clear signs(given to Prophet Moses peace upon him). The Messenger of Allaah (sallallahu alyhi wa sallam) said (these are the signs): - Do not associate anything with Allah,
- Do not steal,
- Do not commit unlawful intercourse,
- Do not take a life which Allah has made prohibited, except for what is required(in the law),
- Do not hasten to damage the reputation of one of power so that he will be killed,
- Do not practice magic,
- Do not consume Riba (interest),
- Do not falsely accuse the chaste woman
- Do not show your back and flee from the battlefield during jihad; and
- For you Jews particularly, do not violate the Sabbath.
Safwan(radhiyallahu anhu) said: Both of them(Jews) kissed the hands & feet of the Prophet(sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and said: We bear witness that you are a Prophet. The Prophet(sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Then why don’t you follow me? They said: Indeed Dawood (peace be upon him) supplicated to his Lord that his offspring never be devoid of Prophets and we feared that if we follow you then the Jews will kill us. Takhreej*: Narrated by Tirmidhee(2733), Ibn Maajah(3705), Ahmed ibn Hanbal(4/239 h. 18092, 4/240 h.18096), Haakim(1/9, h.20), Ibn Abee Shaybah(al-Musannif 14/289 h.36532, al-Musnad 2/327-329, h.880,881), Abu Dawood at-Tayalisee(1164) & Tahaawee(Ma’anee al-Athaar 3/215) and others. Understanding from hadeeth: Sheikh Zubair Alizai Rahimahullah writes: -
At the time of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the Jewish scholars knew that he(sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was indeed a Prophet & Messenger in truth. Despite this, they disbelieved in him. Hence it is understood that to just believe in the heart is not an evidence that such a person is a believer(Mu’min). Infact, to proclaim with the tongue and support with bodily action is also required along with the belief in the heart. -
The nine clear signs( and the tenth point) mentioned here are the ten(10) principles given the Children of Israel. The nine signs mentioned in Surah Banee Israeel(v.101) are other than these signs. Abul Hassan Ali ibn Ahmed al-Waahidee(died. 428H) said: The exegetes say that these nine(9) signs were the following: - The storm
- The locust heart
- The louse
- The toad
- The blood
- The staff
- The hand of Moses(peace be upon him)
- The year of drought and
- The scarcity of fruit.
See: Al-Awsat(v.3 p. 130) These signs are mentioned in the Qur’an. Many of these are the punishment sent upon the Pharaoh and his followers. Also, see Tafseer ibn Katheer(4/187). -
A lot of people don’t feel ashamed in finding excuses or lying in order to reject the truth. Otherwise, it is mentioned in their(Jews’) acclaimed and forged Torah: ”I will send for them from among their brothers, a Prophet like you and put my Words into his mouth.” (Deuteronomy 18:16 p.184) Hence the argument of Dawood’s supplication doesn’t remain any more. In fact the last Prophet was sent from the brothers of the Children of Israel i.e. the Children of Ismail. Hence the Jews didn’t feel a bit of shame in lying and disbelieving. -
To kiss the hands is also proven from other narrations. Aasim bin Bahdalah narrated that when Abu Wa’il(Shaqeeq bin Salmah, Tabi’ee) returned from a journey, he would kiss my hands. (at-Taqbeel wa al-Muanqah by Ibn al-A’rabee with my research 5; its chain is saheeh). Abdu Rahman bin Razeen and others kissed the hands of Salman ibn Aku’ radhiyallahu anhu.(at-Taqbeel wa al-Muanqah:36 and its chain is Hassan, Tabqaat Ibn Sa’ad 4/306, Musnad Ahmed 4/54,55, al-Adab al-Mufrad by Bukharee:973, & al-Albanee said: Its chain is Hassan) Yazeed al-Aswad(Tabi’ee) kissed the hands of Waasilah ibn Asqa’ radhiyallahu anhu (at-Taqbeel wa al-Muanqah:37, its chain is saheeh) But it is apparent from other narrations that kissing the feet is Abrogated(mansookh). The Prophet(sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade prostrating to other than Allaah.(See Sunan ibn Maajah:1853 & Musnad Ahmed 4/381, Saheeh Ibn Hibban, al-Mawaarid:1290;its chain is Hassan) * – The takhreej has been summarized to avoid the discussion on Asma’ ur-Rijaal Author: Hafiz Zubair Alizai Rahimahullah Translated by: taalibeilm via (sheikhzubairalizai dot wordpress dot com) Reference: Sheikh Zubair Alizai`s book Azwah Masaabeeh Fee Tahqeeq Mishkaat Al-Masabeeh (Page:94-97 Hadees #58) |
